The very first bet I ever placed was in the 1989 Derby. An older friend I worked with was a big horse racing fan and unbeknown to me, the Epsom Derby was apparently the most prestigious horse race of the year. I (quite obviously) knew nothing at all about horse racing at the time, but after a couple of lunchtime pints I was merrily persuaded into parting with a token £1 bet on the race.

I scanned the racecard and Terimon, the winner of a lowly maiden race the week before, was the horse of my choosing. Trained by Clive Brittain, Terimon had a mountain to climb in the Derby as you could easily have placed him 30-40lb inferior to the mighty Nashwan, but that meant nothing to me and I’d made my mind up…. 50 pence each-way on Terimon at 500/1 was my bet.

I was a young boy at the time, working with a bunch of hardy ex-dockers who were very well acquainted with betting shop terminology (if not much else!) and oh, how they laughed. Some of these “professional punters” were staking £30, £40, even £50, on the race (probably a third of a week’s wages at the time for the job we were doing) and here was me, 18 years old, with my 50 pence each-way ticket on the outsider of the bunch.

No doubt to them, I was the MUG!

At 3.40pm we all sneaked off to the boozer across the road for a fly afternoon pint and to watch the race. Dodgy Derek, a small chubby chap with the stickiest fingers I’ve ever come across in a workplace, had £40 on the second favourite Cacoethes at 3/1, Big Pete had a tenner each-way on Mill Pond at 16/1, simply because two decades before he’d been on Mill Reef when he won the Derby and therefore anything with Mill in the name was always worthy of a bet in Pete’s mind, and then there was me with my 50 pence each-way on Terimon.

I won’t bore you with a blow-by-blow account of how the race panned out, but it’s safe to say that Nashwan won, my horse Terimon finished second at 500/1 and Cacoethes finished third. Much to everyone else’s disgust, I was better off to the tune of £63 for my 50 pence each-way bet (a grand Derby Day that was!) and from that moment on I was completely and utterly hooked on the betting game!

Now I know that we’ve probably ALL got a horse racing story to tell, but unlike many a lucky first time punter I didn’t go straight from this experience to mug betting. Instead, I reinvested probably 50% of my winnings at the time and bought books about horse racing, so I could learn as much as possible about the form book. Yeah I know, I’ve always been a right boring sod!

For the next few years I read as much as I could, I bought systems and analysed them so that I thoroughly understood the logic behind them, I bought software (some of it at astronomical prices in today’s terms), I learned how to build a book and whenever I visited the racecourse I could tell you the overround on a race within seconds. I could actually price up a bookmaker’s board faster than he could himself. And ever since then I’ve basically lived and breathed horse racing.

There’s absolutely no substitute for knowledge and experience in this game. To quote the old poker anecdote, betting on horse races is something that takes minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. Even then, there have been many old fools who have gone to their grave knowing what they should have done, but never actually doing it when their own money was in the way.

And, that’s why I’d like to introduce you to a special club – which I’m also a member of – that’s sure to take decades off you when it comes to working out what makes money in this game…

Seamus, the forum was going through a bit of a lull a few months back, but it’s been revitalised in some style since they started developing the bots for automatic betting. They’ve got some great stuff going on there at the moment.

Looks good! Thanks for the heads-up on this one!
