Welcome to our review of Great Champions

Great Champions is one of two services run by RacingMasters and they claim
to have had had 5 profitable months in the last 6.
This recent run is said to have made a profit of nearly £800 to £10 a point stakes.
The results are based on a 1-point ‘win’ only basis and they will email you
the Great Champions selections before 10pm every evening before the next day’s racing
(on some very rare occasions, they may email you before 1.30pm on the day of racing).

The service currently costs £10 a month, reduced for the moment from £27 per month.

I will trial this service for 60 days and use a £10 per point staking plan and give the results
and profit/loss at the betfair odds specified in the daily emails. I will also offer a comparison,
showing the results achieved at Betfair SP.

Great Champions (aka Ten Racing): the Final Verdict

The 60 day trial finished showing a small profit of around £90, there wasn’t much difference using Betfair SP or the advised SP. Take off your monthly fee of £10 (reduced from the normal £27) and your left with a profit of £70. Depending on your point of view, is 3.5 points profit per month worth the effort and expense? I’m not greatly enamoured with this service because of an analysis of the figures.

The service produced 55 winners from just under 250 selections meaning a strike rate of fractionally over 20%, which in itself isn’t bad. However when you look closely at the winners you will see all is not so rosy. 34 of the winners were under a betfair price of 3 (2/1 or less), 17 of these were under 2 (meaning odds on ISP), one winner was at a price of 1.17, less than 1/5! I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t be happy about paying for a service that tipped 1/5 shots as winners…dahh.

The profit shown at the end depended on 3 bets during the trial that came home at 17.16, 32.00 and a last day bet of 10.6, without these winners the trial would have been seriously in loss. Against that, it is a tipping service and they did tip 3 big winners and herein lies the problem. This service goes from tipping short priced favourites to long outsiders, it doesn’t seem to have found its niche. I’d be happier to have consistent favourites winning than the large number of higher priced losers with the odd winner.

Another annoying thing is that this service is run by Gold Horse Racing Riches (the name changed during the trial from Racing Masters) who also have another tipping service in their ‘stable’ (formerly Racing Experts now Winners posts tips). These two tipping services frequently gave conflicting advice, it was not uncommon for one service to tip a horse in a certain race whilst the other service would a completely different horse in the same race?

Overall this is not a service that I’d like to have in a portfolio as it depends too heavily on the odd long priced winner and loses too much without them. I wouldn’t mind backing winning favourites (who wouldn’t) but their strike rate would need to increase.
